Harlem Postcards is an ongoing project of the Studio Museum in Harlem, begun in 2002, that invites contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site of cultural activity, political vitality and creative production through the production of an image for a postcard. The resulting postcards were issued as a set in 2023. A selection of the resulting image were hung in 2025 as part of the reopening of the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Ellen Harvey’s “postcard” is a photograph of her painting of Lennox Avenue, hung on a graffiti-covered gate in that section of Lennox Avenue. The graffiti featured in the painting and photograph is by Jonone (Jon Perello). The painting is one of a series of paintings of graffiti in vintage frames called Paintings of Paintings.
Painting in the collection of Jack Helgesson.
